Turkey's reference oncology center gets reapproved

Date: 22/07/2011

Having met European Society of Medical Oncology’s criteria successfully Anadolu Medical Center was found eligible for the renewal of its ESMO accreditation; further proof to the excellence of the Oncology Center.

Anadolu Medical Center keeps a close eye on the latest developments in cancer treatment and looses no time in practicing promising methods at the Oncology Center that was recently accredited by the European Society of Medical Oncology for a second time. The accreditation certificate was presented to Professor Haluk Onat, MD, on behalf of Anadolu Medical Center at a ceremony held in Milano, Italy.ESMO

According to Anadolu Medical Center Oncology Department Director Professor Haluk Onat the ESMO accreditation is not given to any center meeting the requirements. Professor Onat said, “This clause makes acquiring the accreditation more challenging and in many ways carries significant meaning. ESMO accreditation is an honour for the center, its staff, the institution, our country and all healthcare professionals involved in any discipline of palliative care.”

Professor Onat went on to say, “As Anadolu Medical Center, we offer excellent healthcare to our patient by meeting these criteria exactly. ESMO gives equal importance to practiced treatment methods and palliative care. According to ESMO criteria being a cancer center cannot only be limited to providing radiotherapy or chemotherapy. The center must have a support and palliative care unit employing a professional team of well trained healthcare specialists.”

The objective is to comfort the patient and improve quality of life

Later in the conversation Professor Haluk Onat, MD added; “The perfect oncology center should be based on a treatment oriented multidisciplinary framework including medical oncology, radiotherapy, surgery, pathology, radiology and nuclear medicine, all under a single roof. Treatment should be practiced by the book. The center should employ a pain specialist, dietician, psychologist and palliative care team experienced in cancer to take action when treatment options fail. This also is the prerequisite of a multidisciplinary framework.”

Professor Haluk Onat shared their intentions as Anadolu Medical Center on using the advantages of the ESMO accreditation for the benefit of the public, “Thanks to the ESMO accreditation we are building awareness on the issue of palliative care. Anadolu Medical Center Oncology Center was first accredited in October 2007. We had applied for an extension of the accreditation in 2010 and were reaccredited soon after. We are working hard to improve and develop our center. This highlights the quality of service we offer our patients and being a true center of reference in healthcare.”
